“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." - John 16:33 (NIV)
- It can be really difficult to talk about pain and there are many ways one respond to emotional pain.
- Emotional pain has to be managed and dealt with as it affects health, relationships and performance.
- If we feel that something is not right, we have to talk to someone about it
Lessons to be learnt 1: We have a deeper problem than pain
- As a Christian, we should not over-spiritualise mental disorders
- Any mental distress have multiple causes they are not usually due to a single factor or a single sin
Lessons to be learnt 2: We need community to journey through pain
- Community is important
- In Mark 2:1-12, the paralyzed man had friends to lift him down to Jesus from the roof
- In John 5:1-15, the paralyzed man did not have a community, and Jesus found him and became his community
- Everybody needs community
- Sometimes, we can have many friends and communities, but still feel lonely
Lessons to be learnt 3: The Wounded Savior seeks us in our pain
- Behind every pain, there is the shadow of the cross
- There are some of us that have been praying and seeking help for our pain, but it doesn't go away. The Scripture reassures us that
- John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
