Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home” - John 19:25-27 (NIV)
In the 3rd week of the 7 Sayings on the Cross series, Joshua Yee shared with us about how Jesus displayed his love and affection on the cross.
As we look at the importance of love, the passage of John 19:25-27 reveals the way Jesus shows his love in three different ways:
"Honor"
-
While hanging on the cross, Jesus displayed his love and affection by showing honor.
-
Despite being in the epitome of pain, Jesus honored his mum.
-
Jesus displayed beyond obedience, an exemplary honor that not only encompasses respect, but love too.
"Responsibility"
-
Jesus displayed his love and affection by undertaking His responsibility of taking care of His mother.
-
Jesus took care of his mother's future and well-being, He asked her to stay with John.
-
He showed us that regardless of whatever situation and circumstance that He was in, He would stay care for us.
"Humanity"
-
Jesus displayed his love and affection through humanity and He was fully God and human, and He identified with us.
God knows exactly how we feel and think because He identifies with us, and regardless of situational circumstances, He will not fail to take care of us. As Jesus displayed his love, we too should emulate His example of showing love to others.
